Trump celebrates 3 Americans freed from North Korea in victorious return to the US. President Donald Trump personally greeted the three US citizens who returned home after being held captive in North Korea.
Chinese inflation decelerates. Consumer prices in China rose 1.8% year-over-year in April, below the 2.1% level of March and expectations for a smaller deceleration to 1.9%.
New Zealand’s central bank warns on inflation. The Reserve Bank of New Zealand held its key interest rate at 1.75% at the first meeting under the leadership of Adrian Orr, and said it doesn’t expect inflation to hit its 2% target until December 2020.
Hong Kong’s richest man retires. “I think I’ve done the best of what I can,” Li Ka-shing told reporters after the CK Hutchison and CK Asset Holdings shareholder meetings Thursday in Hong Kong. “I feel very grateful.”
Oil surges to a fresh high. West Texas Intermediate crude oil hit a fresh 3.5-year high of $71.89 a barrel as tensions over President Donald Trump’s withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal increased.
California just became the first state to require solar panels on new homes. The California Energy Commission says solar panels should cost the average single-family homeowner an additional $10,000 or so in upfront building costs and bring in savings of double that over 30 years.
Roku beats and raises guidance. The streaming-device maker beat on both the top and bottom lines and raised its full-year revenue guidance for 2018 to between $685 million and $705 million.
Stock markets around the world are higher. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng (+0.89%) led the gains in Asia and Germany’s DAX (+0.53%) is out front in Europe. The S&P 500 is set to open higher by 0.12% near 2,701.

US economic data is light. Initial claims and CPI will both cross the wires at 8:30 a.m. ET. The US 10-year yield is down 2 basis points at 2.97%.
