If you’re someone who ordinarily likes to go rocketing around in your 2016/2017 BMW M3 or M4, then this might pertain to you. NHTSA has just issued a recall on them and this one affects their “propulsion.”
In a recall report that was submitted earlier this month, 2,661 cars were potentially affected. That breaks down to 1,456 M3 sedans, 269 M4 convertibles and 936 M4 and GTS coupes. Apparently, an integral flange for the driveshaft was not made with enough long-term durability, so it could loosen over time.
The resulting risk would be a disconnect between the driveshaft and the flange. Once that happened, the torque from the engine would no longer make it to the rear wheels, causing “a loss of propulsion, and increasing the risk of a crash.”
The report warns drivers to be alert for noises or vibrations coming from beneath the car. Over time, the noise and vibration could get worse. Affected owners will be notified by mail and can take their cars to a nearby BMW dealership to have the driveshaft replaced for free. If they’ve already done the replacement out of pocket, there’s a reimbursement plan in effect as well.
