Is this future of selfies? Facebook used the power of its Oculus technology to create this virtual selfie during the second day of its F8 conference on Wednesday. We can’t decide if it’s cool or just plain weird.
The image above shows Michael Booth, a product manager at Facebook, alongside the company’s chief technology officer Mike Schroepfer. The two were able to virtually interact using VR headsets even though they were physically about 30 minutes away. The pair of execs took a stroll through London with Schroepfer giving a live demo at F8 in San Francisco and Booth back at Facebook HQ in Menlo Park.
“This is just the beginning of our exploration into how people can connect and share using today’s VR technology,” wrote Booth in a Facebook post after the demonstration. He added that the company is working to improve tracking, optics and audio for an even more realistic experience.
For now, though, this goofy virtual selfie represents the cutting edge of VR communication through Oculus technology.
