Wolverine 3 is expected to be Hugh Jackman’s swansong in the X-Men universe, his final hurrah before the role is either retired or put on indefinite hiatus. So how will fans cope with the actor hanging up his muttonchops? Well, a new report says the baton will be handed to a more recent character in the X-verse.
According to SuperheroHype, Wolverine 3 is going to see the feature debut of X-23, who only just began showing up in comics back in 2004—relatively young regarding comic age. The genesis of X-23 came from a group of baddies attempting to replicate the Weapon X program, which is what gave Wolverine his Adamantium skeleton.
X-23 (named Laura Kinney) just so happened to be experiment number 23, and the only successful attempt to clone Wolverine. As you might expect, the character has similar strengths, including lightning-fast reflexes, agility, and healing. One major difference, however, is X-23’s claws; she only has two on each hand, along with one that can pop out of her feet. That makes her incredibly effective in close quarters combat and, in some ways, more dangerous than Wolverine.
Of course, this rumor hasn’t been substantiated by Fox or anyone associated with Wolverine 3’s production, so take it with a grain of salt. We’ve heard that the upcoming film will be loosely based on the Old Man Logan storyline, and team Wolverine up with Professor X. How X-23 fits into all of this is unclear, but it would be a cool way for Hugh Jackman to hand over the role, in a sense, to someone new.
