Earlier this month, Reddit user anon33249038 (we’ll just call him Rick) decided to calculate how much back pay Captain America was owed following his frozen slumber in Captain America: The First Avenger. After taking into account experience, living allowances, pay increases, and inflation, Rick estimated Cap was owed over $3 million, making him the second wealthiest Avengers on the block.
Now, in response to the fan theory, U.S. Army spokesperson, Wayne Hall, confirmed that Cap would certainly be owed money—that is if he were actually real. Here’s some of the statement, in part:
If Capt. Steve Rogers (aka Captain America) were not a fictional character and the circumstances surrounding his disappearance and recovery actually real, he may actually be entitled to receive back pay. However, a wide variety of variables would have to be taken into consideration to actually calculate the true amount of back pay to which he would be entitled to receive.
Hall went on to clarify that the original calculations made by Rick were wrong, and Cap would actually be owed substantially more money. Given the fact that Cap is essentially a fugitive in Civil War, however, chances are he won’t go seeking out his payday any time soon. And, as some commenters on the original Reddit post point out, the lackluster VA (assuming Marvel’s version is similar) likely means Cap will be waiting a long, long time before seeing a dime.
Even still, the man continues to fight for what he believes is right. Just don’t expect him to buy you lunch.
