Google said to be developing live support app for Nexus devices

Google is said to be developing a new live support app for Nexus devices that will offer on-demand technical assistance. The service is expected to be similar to Amazon’s Mayday feature on Fire devices, and it’s already in testing.

It’s thought the new app could be called Google Support, and will provide Nexus owners with live technical support 24 hours a day, seven days a week. A screen-sharing feature will allow support agents to take over your device and troubleshoot issues.

Google is said to be “dogfooding” (testing) this app internally with a view to releasing it in the not-so-distant future. It’s not yet clear whether the service will offer video chat with an agent like Amazon’s does, or whether it will be text- or audio-based.

“The source here is one that has been reliable in the past, and the nature of the evidence they have provided is, in its context, extremely compelling,” reports Android Police, which was first to reveal details about the Google Support app.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard Google is working on a service like this. Way back in 2014, some rumors claimed that a Google Support app was in development for the high-end “Android Silver” program, which never materialized in the end.

It seems Google may have shelved the idea after its Android Silver plans were dropped, then — and now it has restarted development. There’s no word on when the service might be available yet, but we’ll likely have to wait until at least the fall.
