The Indianapolis Colts have signed Andrew Luck to a five-year, $140 million contract extension that includes a record $89 million guaranteed, making him the highest-paid player in the history of the NFL.
Team owner Jim Irsay first tweeted the news of Luck’s extension and the $140 million figure. Several NFL insiders quickly followed up the news with the details of the contract.
As Adam Schefter noted, both the total number ($140 million) and guaranteed money ($89 million) are the most in the history of football.

Prior to Luck’s extension, Philip Rivers and Eli Manning had led the league with $65 million in guaranteed money. Luck’s new contract blows those figures out of the water.
Last season, Luck played just seven games as he struggled with injuries.
