Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine has been a constant in Fox’s X-Men franchise and it looks like he’s getting a proper send-off.
The first trailer for Logan dropped on Thursday, revealing a bleak, hopeless world—a world where mutants are dying and Logan is a shell of his former self. Also, are they in Mexico?
But there’s hope in the form of X-23 (aka Laura Kinney). She’s Wolverine’s female clone, but instead of three claws she wields two. X-23 is just as strong and ferocious, though, so don’t think for a second because she’s a young girl she’s not dangerous.
In fact, the trailer gives viewers a small glimpse of her taking on an entire SWAT team.
“She’s like you. Very much like you.”
As director James Mangold revealed, the older, more weathered Wolverine is weaker than we’ve ever seen him. His healing abilities are waning, so to mask the pain, he drinks heavily. He doesn’t look too good in the trailer.
Patrick Stewart’s Professor Xavier also features in the footage, and he, too, is a shell of his former self. It’s actually tough seeing these characters who we love in such a bad state.
Logan looks unlike any superhero movie we’ve seen. While there are some familiar tropes, the film features a western vibe. Which makes sense, because Mangold already said Logan isn’t going to rely on CGI to be effective.
Of note, the trailer ends with a bloodied Wolverine propped up by a shovel. Did he just bury Professor X? More than likely.
Logan hits theaters on March 3, 2017.
