The new MacBook Pro with Touch Bar is one of the most divisive products on the market right now. Sure, it looks beautiful with its super thin Space Gray body and futuristic OLED function bar, but the four ports and limited spec upgradability limit its usability.
This makes the MacBook Pro a compromise for pro users.
To supplement our review, we gave Apple’s new machine to one of our video editors to see how it holds up in a pro setting. The model he received was the 15-inch entry-level model, with a 2.6GHz Intel Core i7 chip, 16GB of RAM and Radeon Pro 450 with 2GB of RAM. He put the computer through the paces of video editing using competing software, Premiere Pro and Final Cut, and even tested out some games.
The computer didn’t hold up as well as a $2,400 computer probably should. The 16GB of RAM is quite limited considering other laptops can be configured to 32GB. It did perform much better with Apple’s own programs but third-party options were a different story.
Jumping into the dongle life isn’t as glamorous as Apple says it is. Without an SD Card slot, you need to buy a dongle right off the bat just to edit video. This is a must have for editors and Apple’s omission of the port is dumbfounding.
