2016 is not over yet! Wayforward was able to slip in yet another high profile indie game in the closing weeks, announcing that the latest in its premier platforming series Shantae will be released on Dec. 20.
Shantae: Half-Genie Hero is a sort of HD reboot for the franchise, which has mostly dealt with pixel art up until now. Wayforward ran a Kickstarter campaign to fund the game roughly at the same time Mighty No. 9 did back in 2013, and it pulled in about $950,000. Unlike Mighty No. 9, you can see where that money went with the amount of character sunk into the graphics.
The game will launch for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Wii U, and backers can expect their codes in a week or so.
Three years in development is a long time
Shantae: Half-Genie Hero launching this deep into 2016 means that it took three years to make. Knowing what the other games contain, I can’t imagine what took so long. Maybe WayForward underestimated the time needed to develop a native HD game, but wow, I sure hope all that time pays off in quality.
WayForward is a company that knows how to deliver, though, and it’ll give us nothing but the best from its flagship franchise. Shantae: Half-Genie Hero launches for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Wii U on Dec. 20.
