Ryan Reynolds shares Deadpool 2 details ahead of filming

It was a good year for comic book movies. Tom Holland’s Spider-Man stole the show in Captain America: Civil War, and the Justice League came together to take on Doomsday. But the year’s biggest standout was easily Fox’s Deadpool, which has gone on to become the highest-grossing R rated movie of all time.

Naturally, a sequel was quickly green-lit—something actor Ryan Reynolds has finally opened up about following the departure of director Tim Miller.

The good news is that the movie is going to enter into production soon, with filming expected to begin early next year. And although Miller is gone, John Wick director David Leitch has stepped in for the sequel.

Needless to say, Reynolds is a big fan.

“He’s just a guy who’s so muscular with his action,” Reynolds told Entertainment Weekly. “He also really understands those Deadpool sensibilities and where we need to take the franchise from here. And I love John Wick.”

According to producer Simon Kinberg, the sequel will once again be “provocative and startling,” while being something that’s “tonally and stylistically” fresh and original. Certainly, the first Deadpool had that in spades, using dry humor and creative action as tools to create a film faithful to the beloved Marvel character.

Reynolds said they’re currently looking to cast Cable, with the possibility of adding Domino, a female merc with telekinetic powers, to the fray.

Kinberg goes on to explain to EW that just because the first film was successful doesn’t mean they need to make the sequel bigger.

“We have to resist the temptation to make it bigger in scale and scope, which is normally what you do when you have a surprise hit movie,” Kinberg said, adding that it was the tone, style, and irreverent humor that made the first movie such a big hit.

With filming not expected to begin until early next year, don’t expect the sequel to hit theaters until 2018.
