Samsung ‘considers’ bringing Secure Folder feature to Galaxy S7

Samsung has promised it will “consider” bringing its Secure Folder feature to the Galaxy S7 as a downloadable add-on for Android 7.0 Nougat. The feature first made its debut on the now deceased Galaxy Note 7, but it is yet to make its way to other Samsung smartphones.

Secure Folder allowed users to hide personal files — such as images, videos, documents, PDFs and more — in folders that were protected by the Note 7’s fingerprint sensor or iris scanner. It meant only the handset’s owner could access them.

It’s possible to get similar functionality from third-party Android apps available in Google Play, but being baked into Samsung’s TouchWiz software meant Secure Folder was a much more seamless solution that wasn’t plagued by ads or in-app purchases.

Sadly, Secure Folder died with the Note 7, but Samsung could bring it back. After a user requested the feature through the Galaxy Beta program, the South Korean company confirmed it will “consider to support Secure Folder for the OS upgrade device (Nougat).”

However, unlike the Note 7’s version, Secure Folder for the Galaxy S7 would be available as a “downloadable service” through Galaxy Apps — rather than pre-installed with the operating system. “Please note the exact available time has not decided [sic] yet,” Samsung adds.
