Meet Dragon Quest VIII’s original characters from the 3DS version

We all know Yangus, Jessica, Angelo, and… whatever your hero’s name is in Dragon Quest VIII, or at least fans of the series do, but do you know who Red and Morrie are? Well, yes, because they are still NPCs in the PlayStation 2 classic, but Square Enix promoted the pair for the game’s newest release on the Nintendo 3DS.

Nintendo’s description of the two paints them as typical Dragon Quest oddballs.

  • Red – Long time bandit and former companion of Yangus, Red joins your party as a well-rounded character with the ability to use a new weapon: fans.
  • Morrie – Are you full of GUSTO or PASSION!?! Then Morrie is the party member for you! He is the owner of Morrie’s Monstrous Pit the Monster Arena.

No subtlety about Morrie, that’s for sure

Did I misread that, or does Morrie really have a boomerang technique that has been translated into “Swings Both Ways?” I thought Nintendo usually avoided such double entendre in its games.

Either way, I like the idea of new characters, but I also don’t like the idea of chemistry being tampered with or thrown off balance. I don’t like when guests join Noctis and his friends in battle, and a recent playthrough of Wild ARMs reminded me why I avoided the sequel. The three heroes already had enough of a balance in the story, and additional characters would through that balance off.

Something tells me Square Enix knows what it’s doing by adding new characters into a classic, or else I don’t think it would try. Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King will be released for the Nintendo 3DS on Jan. 20.
