Suicide Squad’s David Ayer to direct all-female DC villain project

It seems all the bad press Suicide Squad got wasn’t enough to sever ties between its director, David Ayer, and Warner Bros. Suicide Squad grossed over $745 million globally but was dogged by terrible reviews and rumors of a troubled production. That was all for naught because Ayer is returning to the DC Extended Universe to direct a project focusing on famous DC female villains titled Gotham City Sirens.

Ayer will be teaming up with Suicide Squad star Margot Robbie, who is returning to reprise her role of Harley Quinn. Robbie’s performance was one of the highlights of the film and ended up becoming a fan favorite. Gotham City Sirens is a comic book series that ran from 2009 to 2011 and revolved around the some of Batman’s most famous female villains, including Harley Quinn, Catwoman and Poison Ivy.

Originally, there were rumors that this untitled project, which was also speculated to star Margot Robbie, was going to be a solo Harley Quinn movie or a Birds of Prey and Gotham City Sirens mash up. As the project evolved and gained traction, it seems the focus shifted toward the villains instead of heroes. It’s unclear if the Birds of Prey characters will be part of the project.

DCEU adds another movie to its schedule

Gotham City Sirens is now on a fast track to get made, which continues to flesh out the schedule for the DCEU. Just last week, it was revealed that Justice League 2 would be delayed in favor of Ben Affleck’s Batman movie. Wonder Woman and Justice League are the two DCEU movies scheduled for release next year, followed by Aquaman.

David Ayer will direct the script penned by Geneva Robertson-Dworet, who also wrote the script for the Lara Croft reboot. No release date has been announced for Sirens as of yet.
