Over the weekend, Warner Bros. released the first TV spots for Batman v Superman—both of which ramp up the tension between the two characters.
In one video, the two superheroes meet dressed as their alter egos—Bruce Wayne and Superman; in the other, the two rendezvous at what looks like a gas plant, where we get to see Batman demonstrate his poor parking skills.
In the first TV spot, as Batman drives up in his tough-looking Batmobile, Superman flicks it aside, sending it into a nearby building. As the two confront each other, this is the moment Batman utters the now infamous question, “Do you bleed? You will.”
I’m confused why this is the moment Batman chooses to utter such a ridiculous line. Superman just brushed off Batman’s ride like he was sweeping away a brittle leaf, and Batman still has the gall to ask him if he bleeds. Superman, clearly annoyed by Batman’s childishness, simply flies away like he has better things to do.
I liked it better when Batman uttered the line in his power armor. At least Batman looked threatening then. Having him say it after crashing a car just makes it seem like a false threat.
The confrontation between the characters as their alter egos is much more compelling, as the two banter back and forth before Lex gets involved. That dynamic looks to be working quite well, and appears much more realistic than Batman taking on a superhero who is clearly much more powerful than him.
And Lex, well, I’m probably in the minority, but I’m excited to see what Jesse Eisenberg brings to the table. Lex Luthor is typically measured and menacing and brooding. Eisenberg’s portrayal of the character (technically Lex Luthor’s son) is manic and peppy, not unlike the Joker.
Batman v Superman is scheduled for a March 25, 2016 release.
