Watch what happens when an iPhone falls in molten aluminum

Seeing iPhones getting destroyed is a very cathartic experience. There’s just something about seeing an expensive piece of technology seize to exist, and that’s exactly what happens to an iPhone SE in the latest video by The Backyard Scientists.

In the video, the device is dropped into molten aluminum—and it’s awesome. There is no question about what is about to happen to the phones The Backyard Scientists test (other than get completely destroyed), but it’s still fun to watch.

When the phone falls into the bucket, the first things to burn off are the battery and plastic parts, which quickly combust into a fiery blaze. As the aluminum frame slowly burns it turns into a silvery slab that looks a lot like the T-1000 from Terminator 2. Eventually, the phone just becomes charred black bits of nothingness.

Although I think its self-explanatory, I should mention that this should not be tried at home. The guys take extreme precautions when handling the piping hot fluid. They use face masks, gloves and a plastic sheet of plastic to get the close up of the phone dropping into the molten goop.

What’s the point of these experiments? Fun.

There may be a few of you out there decrying these experiments for wasting a perfectly working phone. But you still can appreciate learning what happens to a phone if it falls into molten aluminum. You probably won’t be able to take into your local Apple Store for a replacement unit.
