Federer’s appearance at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event will be the first time he has competed since his US Open quarterfinal loss to Juan Martín del Potro.
Federer was awarded a “bye” in the first round of the Shanghai tournament and will face the winner of Diego Schwartzman and Jordan Thompson’s match, in the Round of 32.
He is the number two seed for the competition so will not meet Rafael Nadal until the final, providing both progress.
