A Swiss freestyle skier bodged a trick and landed painfully on the lip of the halfpipe at the Winter Olympics on Tuesday.

In halfpipe skiing, athletes are judged by the quality of tricks they perform while riding down the pipe. It is considered dangerous when compared to other sports, and helmets are therefore a compulsory part of the kit.

During a qualification run at the Phoenix Ski Resort in Pyeongchang ahead of the men’s halfpipe final on Thursday, Joel Gisler demonstrated just how dangerous the sport can be.

He attempted a backward spin for his first trick on his second run, but as he tried to land he hit the lip, his skis buckled off of his feet, and he slid awkwardly to the floor.

Gisler received medical assistance, but he was eventually able to walk away from the halfpipe by himself.
