News of Cadillac’s new 2019 CT6 V-Sport dropped yesterday. And y’all? I am freaking STOKED about it. Keep in mind that I’m generally someone who hates most new cars, too.
First of all, it’ll have Cadillac’s new and exclusive 4.2-liter twin-turbo V8, good for 550 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque. That is a lot of horsepower and torque, guys!
I haven’t seen a name for this engine yet other than “hot V,” which is already a pretty badass name for an engine. Hot V. Like the name of the bartender at that biker bar with a heart of gold but also wouldn’t hesitate to beat the shit out of you if you misbehaved in her bar. A true flagship engine name.
And this CT6 V-Sport is finally the proper kind of flagship that the Cadillac lineup needed. The regular CT6, even with the top-level 3.0-liter, twin-turbo V6 and 404 HP, never really cut it, in my mind. Driving it, I found it to be quick and agile, but not fast. Not exciting. Part of that was because it didn’t have a powerful V8. It needed a powerful V8. And now it has a powerful V8.

And good Lord, the looks to match, too. This is aesthetically the closest production Cadillac to date to the gorgeous Escala sedan concept that we saw a couple years back. That’s what we all wanted a Cadillac flagship to look like. Obviously, I’d have to see the CT6 V-Sport in person to be sure, but in photos, it seems big and menacing, so hopefully that part of the Escala translated successfully.
And with AWD and a 10-speed automatic, the CT6 V-Sport definitely isn’t the mad and muscle-y sedan that the CTS-V is. That space is currently occupied. It doesn’t need the hilarious power output that a CTS-V has because 550 HP is great for a big and executive sedan. That is more than enough to get the thing moving. (But if some sort of CT6-V were being planned, you won’t hear me saying no).

There’s no doubt in my mind that Cadillac makes great cars. We’re big fans of the ATS-V and the CTS-V. But they are getting old and we were in desperate need of something to sit on top of the Cadillac lineup. The CT6 V-Sport, though it probably needs a more inspiring name, is finally that car.
I can’t wait to drive it.
