A couple of days ago, this 2019 Corvette ZR1 was delivered to its new owner. It is allegedly VIN 4, and the first manual ZR1 delivered. That’s the kind of thing that Corvette collectors care about, and it’s good for bragging rights, but not much else. More interesting for the rest of us, however, was that the new owner decided the first trip for the car was to Race Proven Motorsports in New Castle, Delaware for a rip on the Dyno to see how much power it could crank out.
The ZR1 is rated at 750 horsepower from the factory, which is measured at the crankshaft, of course. Considering driveline losses are different for each car, and are especially high when the car has to carry beefy transmission components, strengthened differentials, and hearty axles, an often cited rule of thumb (with no actual scientific backing) is to cut about 15% of the crankshaft horsepower to get a ballpark wheel rating. In order to match that, this ZR1 had to turn a number close to 640 horsepower.
After a couple of runs on this dynojet, the ZR1 put down a 668 horsepower number with 644 lb-ft of torque, meaning it lost just 11% of its power to drivetrain losses. This certainly helps explain how a wingless ZR1 did 190 MPH at The Texas Mile last week.

And judging by what the dyno operator claims in this video, there’s a whole lot more power that can be gained with simple fuel and boost tuning.
