Many people will tell you that if you live in a city you need a small, compact hatchback to get around. A “city car,” they’ll say. This is bullshit, because the actual cars that park and drive around the middle of Manhattan are Oshkosh Medium Tactical Vehicles.
At least, that’s what you’ll find if you turn the corner on 25th and Lex and find yourself staring at the vast 69th Regiment Armory (nice), which holds both art shows in its big hall and also the New York Army National Guard’s 1st Battalion, 69th Infantry Regiment.
Welcome back to Carspotting! It’s been a while but we’re back with the worst walking tour of New York City, headed by me, a hack who is barely qualified to tell you which subway lines go uptown or downtown. It’s no longer a live series—let us know what you think about this—but we’re still out to find the best cars of the Big Apple.
We went out for a bit of carspotting the other day and managed to have a very truck-ey episode, seeing not only a Piaggo Ape Classic, but also a very honorable ZJ Grand Cherokee doing what it does best (accruing high miles while working as a work truck) before we bumped into the armory. That’s where we spotted the above Oshkosh Cargo 4×4 (I think it’s a M1078 A1P2, a 2.5-ton 4×4) as well as a real Hummer truck, not like the shit you saw on dealer lots in the second Bush administration.
