A Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR, a car which makes a McLaren F1 seems like a Honda Accord, is going up for auction at Pebble Beach. Now may be a good time, if you’re interested in dishing out what’s projected to be over $4 million, to talk about that time it caught fire during the shooting of Top Gear.
Former Top Gear host and former–current Fifth Gear host, as well as driving and racing legend, etc. etc. Tiff Needell chimed in on Twitter earlier today to let everybody know that, no matter their childhood fantasies, the road-going version of the Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR was… not really great off of the track, and full of surprises:
Trusting his natural journalist instincts, Jalopnik Features Editor Raphael Orlove was quick to follow up with Tiff about the whole car “burst into flames” point, as one can’t simply let that sit on the timeline unexplained:

Tiff’s casual shrugging off of the CLK GTR trying to kill him in traffic is admirable, and more a testament to Tiff than it is to the car. It’s very unfortunate that nothing made it into the final Top Gear film, which you can watch below.
I highly suggest you give it a watch if you plan on picking one of these up at the Pebble Beach auction, as I’m not sure it still comes with two AMG mechanics standing by. I wish you all of the best.
