Maserati’s Alfieri sports car has had a long and hard battle toward production. The company unveiled this concept in 2014 with a planned production date sometime in 2017 for the 2018 model year. It wasn’t supposed to supplant the already long-in-the-tooth GranTurismo and GranCabrio, but was supposed to live alongside them as a smaller and more nimble Maser. Now, Maserati CEO Harald Wester told Autocar, the car is planned for production next year, once GranTurismo production ends.
The GranTurismo was introduced in 2007, which makes Ferrari’s long-standing chassis look practically brand new. Now, 12 years later, it is coming to an end, and the production version of its replacement will take a bow at the Geneva show one year from now.
“Any product we touch or make will have significant electrification,” said Wester to Autocar. “The main launches for new products are in 2021/22 and by the end of 2022 we will have a completely new range. For each and every line-up, we will have a full battery electric version. Not only that but at least one.”

Maserati’s Modena plant is scheduled to be renovated following the end of GranTurismo/GranCabrio production later this year. The scope of the renovation will include an update to the production line to pivot to the new two-seater model, as well as to incorporate those new electric propulsion bits.
Under new leadership, Maserati is hitting hard this year, with plans to offer extensive revamps of the Ghibli, Quattroporte, and Levante, as well as a second SUV in the works. Maybe the company is finally coming out of the doldrums.
