Motorola has decided that it will not be releasing an Android 5.0 Lollipop update for the Droid Ultra, Droid Mini, or Droid Maxx. The company initially planned to offer the upgrade for these handsets, but now that’s changed without an explanation.
“We apologize that we will not be upgrading DROID Ultra / Mini / Maxx to Android Lollipop, as we had hoped,” confirmed Motorola’s David Schuster on Google+. “We know how important software upgrades are to our customers, and we’re very sorry that we are unable to provide the upgrade.”
Given that these handsets will be three years old this August, it’s not too surprising to see this news — but it will certainly come as a disappointment to owners who had been expecting a Lollipop upgrade, and will now be stuck with KitKat.
The only way to get more up-to-date software (other than turning to third-party ROMs), would be to upgrade your device. Fortunately, Motorola is offering a nice incentive to those who take this route, with special discounts on the Droid Turbo 2 and Droid Maxx 2.
The discounts reduce the price of the Droid Turbo from $624 to $524 off-contract, and the Droid Maxx 2 from $384 to $334. They are only available to those who own a Droid Ultra, Droid Mini, or Droid Maxx until Thursday, May 19.
