With Wolverine 3 set to be Hugh Jackman’s last foray as the mutton-chopped superhero, it sounds like he’s going to go out with a bang. In addition to possibly receiving an R-rating, Den of Geek reports the film will follow a storyline fans have been begging to see on the big screen: Old Man Logan.
According to the report, Fox has been planning to adapt the Old Man Logan storyline for a while and was aiming for an R rating long before Deadpool was released. With the immense success of Deadpool, however, it sounds like the box office response just further cemented the studio’s decision to feature more mature content.
Old Man Logan began in 2008, running through Wolverine #66-72 and ended in Wolverine Giant-Size Old Man Logan in 2009. In the comics, Logan refuses to revert to his “Wolverine” persona because of an incident that occurred at the X-Mansion. However, over the course of the story, he finally does unleash his claws, going into a berserker rage, which allows an animal instinct to take over.
The comic book story is very violent and features murders, decapitations and more. Basically, it could make the violence we saw in Deadpool appear tame by comparison. Wolverine has always been portrayed as someone with a strict moral code onscreen, but it will be great to see him a little more unhinged.
Given what occurs in the comics, it’s unclear how Fox will make the storyline happen, especially since many of the characters can’t be used. Chances are it’ll match the story in tone, rather than a beat for beat re-creation. Either way, expect Wolverine 3 to be quite violent.
