It would be a silly move for any major tech company to sit on the sidelines of virtual reality right now. Google, Samsung, Oculus, Facebook, HTC, Valve, Intel and many more have all decided to dive head-first into creating either virtual reality headsets, experiences or software. Sounds like Amazon wants in on the fun, too.
A recent job posting, first noticed by UploadVR, seeks a senior software development manager for virtual reality in Amazon’s video business. The job description reads as follows:
Amazon Video is seeking a talented Senior Software Development Manager to lead our Virtual Reality team. This team is responsible for building the Virtual Reality experience within Amazon Video. Entertainment is evolving rapidly. The future will not be limited to passive 2D experiences. The Virtual Reality team will explore and create the platform and interface for immersive storytelling. This will include an ingestion and playback platform for Virtual Reality experiences.
The job listing gets right to the point: Amazon wants to build a way for its customers to experience its content in virtual reality. That might mean movies, games, original TV shows and more. It could also mean Amazon wants a way to deliver all of this content, perhaps through its own headset. Could a Fire VR product be on the horizon? Seems possible, unless it just wants the experience to exist on other platforms, like Gear VR, the Oculus Rift, Google Cardboard and the HTC Vive.
Seems like we might be in for a bit of a wait, though, if this is just the start of its VR initiative.
