Google launched the full version of Android 7.1.1 for Pixel and Nexus phones on Friday. It’s available through several means, including over-the-air or manual flashing, for the Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel C, Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, Nexus 9 and Nexus Player. That means everyone should get a taste, but don’t get too excited if you’re on a Nexus device.
Android 7.1.1 still doesn’t include Google Assistant for non-Pixel devices. We didn’t expect it to, but we also wanted to set expectations so our readers don’t get their hopes up. According to Android Police, you can look for long-awaited features like lift-to-wake and double tap notifications, two features that already hit Pixel smartphones in Canada late last month. The builds are apparently older than what’s available in the developer preview, so folks who want the newest software may want to stick on that for the time being.
App shortcuts for Nexus devices
Nexus devices are getting the App Shortcuts, too, the convenient feature first introduced on the Pixel that lets you access more content by swiping across the icons of supported applications. The launch should also include Google’s latest December security update for Android, in addition to new emoji and a new keyboard that supports GIF search, which are also available for Pixel devices.
