The CEO of Hudson Pacific Properties recently said that Google and Apple, in addition to other automakers, are searching for land around San Francisco to test autonomous vehicles. The executive made his statements on a recent investor call, The Wall Street Journal said, perhaps in an effort to boost investor confidence in his company.
“We’re seeing the Toyotas of the world, the Teslas of the world, BMWs, Mercedes. Ford now is out in the marketplace looking for space,” Coleman said. “I haven’t even mentioned the 400,000 square feet that Google’s looking to take down and the 800,000 square feet that Apple’s looking to take down for their autonomous cars as well.”
Google’s car tests are public, and it’s already running experiments on public roads, so it’s unclear why it might need so much additional space. Project Titan, the alleged codename for the Apple Car, is still shrouded in secrecy. Any testing performed on 800,000 square feet of space would no doubt start to put Apple’s project within view of spy photographers. If I was Apple, I’d probably try to do my testing far, far away from headquarters if I wanted to keep things secret. The Wall Street Journal suggested that the spaces are too small for factories, by the way.
