Apple cuts storage upgrade prices for older Macs

Apple has slashed the price of its storage upgrades for older build-to-order Macs, saving customers up to $200 on some upgrades. The cuts have been applied to last year’s MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, Mac Pro, iMac, and Mac mini.

Apple has always charged high prices for storage upgrades — especially when you consider how little the company actually pays suppliers for its storage drives. They’re still expensive even after the cuts, but at least they’re a little bit more affordable now.

Until last week, a 512GB storage upgrade for entry-level machines was priced between $300 and $400 — depending on the Mac you were buying. However, the same storage upgrade can now be purchased for between $200 and $300.

A 1TB storage upgrade was previously priced between $800 and $900, but Apple has reduced the price of this upgrade to between $600 and $700.

For instance, those buying a midrange 27-inch iMac can now upgrade to 512GB of storage for $300, or 1TB of storage for $700. Just a week ago, these upgrades would have cost $400 and $900 respectively.

The new MacBook Pro is still expensive

“Higher-end options have also received a price drop,” reports 9to5Mac. “For example, the high-end 13-inch MacBook Air can be upgraded to 512GB for $200, which is $100 less than before. The high-end iMac can now be upgraded to 1TB for $100 less than before.”

Apple’s cuts come at a time when the company is facing backlash from many consumers who believe the prices for its latest MacBook Pro are too high. An entry-level 13-inch machine with Touch Bar and Touch ID is $500 more than last year’s 13-inch MacBook Pro.
