Apple promises fix for 1970 date bug in iOS

Apple has acknowledged and promised to fix a mysterious bug that causes iOS devices to enter a boot loop when users set the date to May 1970 or earlier. A short support document on its website confirms an upcoming software update will fix the problem.

Discovered last week, the bug causes iPhones, iPads, and iPod touches to enter a boot loop when users manually set the date to May 1970 or earlier. It’s unlikely anyone would do this accidentally, but it can be used as a tremendously harsh prank.

To fix the issue, users must either wait for their device’s battery to die, or disconnect it temporarily, which causes iOS to reset the clock. An iTunes restore also works, but can cause data loss if you do not have a recent backup.

The problem is demonstrated in the video below.

Apple has now promised to eliminate this issue. “An upcoming software update will prevent this issue from affecting iOS devices,” reads its support document. The company also recommends contacting Apple support if you have a device affected by this problem.
