Apple promises iTunes update to stop local files being deleted

Apple has promised it will release an iTunes update to prevent the app from deleting local music files without user permission. The company says only a very small number of users have been affected by the issue.

Apple’s statement comes after various complaints from iTunes users, who have had their local music libraries removed when signing up to Apple Music or iTunes Match. There have only been a handful, but this is still considered a serious problem.

“In an extremely small number of cases users have reported that music files saved on their computer were removed without their permission,” the company told iMore.

“We’re taking these reports seriously as we know how important music is to our customers and our teams are focused on identifying the cause. We have not been able to reproduce this issue, however, we’re releasing an update to iTunes early next week which includes additional safeguards.”

Apple also advises users who have experienced this issue to contact AppleCare. Because the company has been unable to reproduce it, it’s still unclear whether this really is a problem with the way in which iTunes matches music, or just a bug in Apple’s code.

Whether you’ve experienced this problem or not, it’s a good idea to be on the lookout for that iTunes update and install it as soon as possible. Just because your music files are safe now, it doesn’t mean the problem won’t get you later.
