Back to the Future: The Ride to close its last location in May

Back to the Future: The Ride, which made its debut at Universal Studios Florida back in 1991, will be closing down once and for all.

After it was replaced by The Simpsons Ride at its Florida and Hollywood locations in 2007, Cinema Today reports the simulation experience will be shut down at Universal Studios Japan on May 31. The ride’s closure marks the end of what was easily one of the cooler movie-themed experiences; I’d say on a par with Disneyland’s Star Tours.

The ride’s story focused on a first-person narrative, putting riders through a race in time after Biff Tannen, the trilogy’s villain. It was campy, thrilling, and incredibly fun, but after more than a decade in operation, its age began to show. You can watch the entire ride for yourself in the video below—as you can see, the VFX aren’t exactly groundbreaking.

It’s a sad, sad day, but even though it’ll soon be gone, it’ll never be forgotten. If you do find yourself at Universal Studios Japan, you have a few more months to check out an amazing piece of theme park history.
