BlackBerry Priv Android Marshmallow beta signups now open

BlackBerry announced Monday that it’s kicking off a beta trial of Android 6.0 Marshmallow for the BlackBerry Priv. It’s not open to everyone just yet, so don’t go jumping out of your chair.

BlackBerry said, so far, its focus has been on providing frequent updates for the BlackBerry Priv and its current Android 5.1 Lollipop operating system. Now that interest in Marshmallow has increased, it’s ready to start putting its efforts on the first major OS update for the smartphone.

The beta of Android Marshmallow for the BlackBerry Priv includes all of the major features in Google’s software including Doze, App Standby, Now on Tap. BlackBerry said users will get early versions of security patches, too, which is an added bonus on top of Android Marshmallow.

The beta test is open to customers who bought the phone from ShopBlackBerry, Amazon or Carphone Warehouse – so folks who bought it from a carrier aren’t invited. There’s limited space, too, but you can join a waitlist for a chance to join later if you don’t get in right away. BlackBerry said it expects Android Marshmallow to sit in beta testing for 4-8 weeks, which also suggests a final version of the software is at least 2 months out.
