Burning Fuel Sprays Onto Crowd At Burnout Competition, Injuring Over A Dozen

At a burnout competition in Alice Springs, Australia, on Sunday, things went very, very wrong, after the car of a driver doing burnouts spewed flaming fuel into the crowd, injuring 14, including one man who was left in critical condition.

In a statement, Red Centre NATS, organizers of the event, billed as the“ultimate festival on wheels,” said Sunday they had canceled the rest of it, “So the focus can be on the people who are in need of assistance.”

Videos taken at the scene show a frightening sequence of events, with the car doing routine burnouts before flames begin spewing from its rear, directly into the crowd.

It’s unclear what fueled the flames, and whether they started on the track or within the car itself, though NT News reported Tuesday that an investigation was underway.

“Now, our focus is on providing as much support as we can to the family and friends of the people who have been injured,” Andrew Hopper, a government official, told NT News.

The man in critical condition has burns to 30 percent of his body and head, and was flown to Adelaid for treatment, along with his son, who is said to be in serious condition.
