Audi’s doing an electric crossover. So is Mercedes. So is BMW. And so now that Cadillac is to be General Motors’ lead electric brand, it has to go where the competitors are. Meet the first public sketch of Cadillac’s EV crossover future, unveiled at an event tonight ahead of the Detroit Auto Show.
What do we know for now? Not a ton. The design was revealed at the debut party for the 2020 Cadillac XT6 tonight, but nothing physical was shown off. Still, the audience of journalists and industry folks was told it will be a crossover, will come in two-wheel drive or all-wheel drive and will use an all-new skateboard electric platform. In other words, this won’t be built on an existing architecture like the Chevrolet Bolt.
Hopefully we’ll get more tonight from GM itself.

The news comes at a time of great upheaval for Cadillac, GM’s storied but struggling luxury brand. Its move to New York City, focus on BMW-fighting sedans and flashy marketing campaigns largely didn’t translate into sales. Now it has a new boss and a renewed focus on crossovers and SUVs, presumably until it goes electric in the coming years.
But will this Cadillac EV be a leader, or just another follower from a brand that never seems to know what it’s supposed to be doing?
