Our emissions standards are probably the biggest booster to automotive performance in the past half century, making our cars not only more eco-friendly but more powerful, too. Trump has been trying to cut it all down, but now California and 16 other states suing to stop him.
That tweet comes from the AP’s White House reporter, and the AP’s Kathleen Ronayne has the full list of states (via The Seattle Times):
The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. Joining California are Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Virginia and the District of Columbia.
If you’re wondering how many states conform to California’s standards, it’s 13, as listed by Green Car Reports, meaning that this is bad enough to piss off even a handful of non-CARB states:
Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington.

California has been making noise about this issue since virtually the beginning of the Trump administration, vowing that it would go its own way and then getting into a more protracted legal fight with the EPA just last month. This is a bit different from Trump’s work against penalties against violating these standards getting blocked the other week.
Will all this just get kicked around until the Supreme Court? Maybe, but it’s a fight that even the automakers should hope we’ll win.
