Comment Of The DayYour good comments.Regardless of whether or not you’re in favor of self-driving cars, it seems like this comes up in every conversation about them: the current state of autonomy being marketed as “autopilot” or “self-driving” is dangerous.
Some version of iska2000’s statement has surfaced many times, and it does seem like there’s something to be said for an “all or nothing approach” here.
Unlike, say anti-lock brakes or airbags or seatbelts, primitive versions of autonomous safety tech include the inherent danger of encouraging drivers to be less attentive. And when things go wrong, they go very wrong indeed.
On one hand, the technology has to start somewhere. On the other, maybe “self-driving” cars should be confined to testing facilities before they’re tested out on the public.
