UFC star Conor McGregor has apologised for his actions at a Bellator MMA event in Dublin on Friday.

McGregor was in attendance to support Straight Blast Gym teammate Charlie Ward who defeated John Redmond by technical knockout.

McGregor’s “emotions got the best of” him as he jumped the Bellator cage and celebrated with Ward, but then appeared to shove the referee before arguing with Bellator employees.

“I sincerely apologise for my behavior at last weekend’s fight event in Dublin,” the 29-year-old said on Instagram.

“While trying to support a loyal teammate and friend, I let my emotions get the best of me and acted out of line. As a multiple weight UFC champion, executive producer, role model and public figure, I must hold myself to a higher standard.”

Some of the incident was caught on camera and posted on Bellator’s official YouTube page.

McGregor said he was acting out of interest in Redmond’s safety.

“The referee Marc Goddard was making a horrendous decision in trying to pick an unconscious fighter up off the floor and force the fight to continue into the second round.

“I lost it and over reacted. I am sorry to everyone.”

In a Facebook post, Goddard said McGregor “verbally assaulted” him. When McGregor was ejected from the cage, he said he continued “his verbal tirade and threats.”

Mike Mazzulli, the president of the Association of Boxing Commissions and Combative Sports, is exploring whether McGregor could be punished for his actions.

“I will be looking at it and speaking to my attorneys upon returning to the United States to see if I have any action,” he told the Daily Mail.
