Corvette Z06 Driver Was Reportedly Traveling 125 MPH Prior To Crash

Late last month, authorities charged the driver of a Chevrolet Corvette Z06 who wrecked the car after smashing into a tree just outside Ann Arbor, Michigan. Now, we know the car—once featured on the YouTube series Vehicle Virgins—was traveling 125 mph seconds before the crash, thanks to the detective work of The Ann Arbor News.

The report from the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office shows that the driver, 21-year-old Jiefu Gong, told police immediately after the crash that he was traveling 10 to 15 mph over the speed limit. Turns out, he was in fact clocking in at 125 mph, the report says.

Here’s more from the News:

The police report, which The Ann Arbor News obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request, shows the yellow, 2016 Corvette was traveling 125 miles per hour on Huron River Drive 5 seconds before the crash.

The posted speed limit on the winding, tree-lined road is 35 miles per hour.

A half-second prior to impact, the Corvette was traveling at 93 miles per hour, according to the car’s event data recorder, the report says.

The impact left the car completely destroyed, photos show. Gong initially told investigators at a hospital that he had no recollection of the crash. His passenger said in an interview with police that she was a “little scared” because of the speed, but she wasn’t aware of how fast the Corvette was traveling, the News reports. Both occupants in the car were left injured in the crash.
