Dark Souls III has now officially eclipsed its two predecessors to become the best selling game in the series. Since launch last month, the game has shipped 3 million copies worldwide, as confirmed by publisher Bandai Namco.
500,000 of these sales come from its home country of Japan, but its true success lies in the west with 1.5 million in North America and 1 million heading to Europe. Like Final Fantasy and The Legend of Zelda before it, Dark Souls has finally become one of those legendary Japanese series which sees more success overseas.
And the success of Dark Souls III pushes the series into a grand total of 13 million shipped copies worldwide. Sadly, Bandai Namco can’t comment on the success of Demon’s Souls or Bloodborne, since it did not publish this spiritual-cousins of the Dark Souls games. No matter how you spin it, it’s a huge success for a series that was once a niche afterthought in the gaming world.
Dark Souls III is available now for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
