When trailers for Suicide Squad started rolling out, everyone assumed Jared Leto’s Joker would be the movie’s villain. As it turned out, he barely featured in the film at all, with a lot of his footage apparently axed on the cutting room floor—something Suicide Squad director David Ayer says he regrets.
Responding to a fan on Twitter, Ayer said he wishes he could have a redo.
“Wish I had a time machine,” Ayer said. “I’d make Joker the main villain and engineer a more grounded story.”
Ayer’s response is pretty candid and admits the vision he had in his head didn’t quite translate to the big screen.
“I took inspiration from the insanity of the original comics,” Ayer continued. “Making a movie is a journey, not a straight line. I learned so much. People want what they want, and everyone has a personal vision of how each character should look and walk and talk.”
For the most part, people didn’t so much have an issue with how the characters were portrayed as they did with the story, which mostly centered and Deadshot and made Enchantress the villain.
“If you set out to make a mass appeal movie, it’s easy to end up with vanilla,” Ayer said. “But I went for it. And I know Squad has it flaws. Hell, the world knows it. Nothing hurts more than to pick up a newspaper and see a couple years of your blood, sweat and tears ripped to shreds.”
Jared Leto’s Joker was… something
It would have been cool to see Suicide Squad with Joker as the main villain. As it is, he was barely in it and mostly served as a nuisance rather than an actual threat. That being said, Leto’s portrayal of the character was… off. In the pantheon of onscreen Jokers, his was the least exciting.
In any case, it’s nice to see Ayer open up about Suicide Squad and explain his version of events. Although he’s proud of the film, that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t do things a lot different.
