Death Stranding: Guillermo del Toro is just an actor, not a creator

Following the canceled Silent Hills, gamers feared that the long sought-after collaboration between developer Hideo Kojima and filmmaker Guillermo del Toro would never come to fruition.

Then the trailer for Death Stranding dropped during last year’s Game Awards. del Toro was actually rendered in the game (carrying a baby in a jar that would vanish, no less). You can see the footage in the trailer above.

Fans had hoped that maybe this meant del Toro was working with Kojima again. Well, sort of. He’s not making Death Stranding, he’s simply in it. Here he is with IGN:

“I’m involved as a character… Kojima-san called me and said, ‘I want you to be a character in the game,’ and I said, ‘Gladly.’ He’s discussed his ideas so I could understand the character, but other than that I’m not involved, creatively, at all…

…This is entirely Kojima-san’s game. I’m just a puppet in his hands. My contribution is limited to being a cheerleader for his ideas, and being scanned for long hours at a time. That’s about it.”

You know what? I’ll take it

del Toro was awesome in the brief trailer. He fits into Kojima’s world perfectly. I have no problem with him being in Death Stranding.

In fact, I love that these two got together to work in some way after the whole Silent Hills thing with Konami. Good for both of them.

We’ll have more on Death Stranding as it comes.
