Players often swap shirts at the end of historic football matches, but Diego Costa has taken the custom to new heights.
The striker, still contracted to Premier League club Chelsea, filmed himself partying in an Atletico Madrid shirt on Instagram Live on Sunday.
The 28-year-old was reportedly “told by message” in June that he is surplus to Chelsea manager Antonio Conte’s requirements.
In a message to Chelsea teammate and fellow Spaniard, Cesc Fabregas, during the Instagram broadcast, Costa said: “Give Conte a hug!“
Though Costa is yet to leave the club, his video is surely proof that his loyalties now lie elsewhere. But he’ll have to wait if he wants to join Athletico.
The Spanish club is banned from registering new players after breaking rules introduced to prevent the child trafficking of youth footballers.
It could still sign the €79.5 million (£70 million)-rated Costa but the player would not be able to compete in any Atletico games until the ban is over, in January.
Costa is barred from Chelsea’s pre-season preparations as the club hopes to find the player a new club. He has been passing the time by quad biking. He has also holidayed in Lagarto, Brazil.
