DirecTV will air Premier League matches in 4K starting this weekend

AT&T and NBC announced that DirecTV will broadcast a Premier League matches in 4K beginning this weekend when Manchester City takes on Tottenham at 12:30 p.m. EST on Saturday, January 21 and again on Sunday when Arsenal takes on Burnley at 9:15 a.m. ET.

AT&T said it’ll continue to provide DirecTV customers with 4K coverage of Premier League games throughout the season, depending on which games NBC Sports Group decides to give the privilege to. You’ll get the same coverage that friends and family tuning in for regular HD versions of the game will see and hear, just in greater detail that you’ll be able to notice on a 4K television with the right DirecTV gear. NBC highlighted that it gave the same treatment to the Rio Olympic Games and Notre Dame Football.

“Premier League action in the stunning detail and color of 4K UHD on DIRECTV will be a pitch perfect viewing experience, whether you’re a devoted or occasional fan of the game,” said Dan York, chief content officer for AT&T.

Make sure you have the right DirecTV gear

DirecTV customers will need a Genie HD DVR (model HR54) or later, AT&T said, in addition to a “DirecTV 4K Ready TV, or a 4K TV connected to a 4K Genie Mini.” That’s all gibberish to me, but sounds like you need to be renting the right gear to get the games. If you don’t have DirecTV, maybe seek out a comfy pub with a 4K TV to get the full experience. Better there anyway, right?
