Disney rollercoaster shut down mid-ride because of selfie stick

Disney’s California Screamin’ roller coaster was shut down for nearly two hours earlier this week, but not because of maintenance or inclement weather. According to ABC7, it was all because someone couldn’t resist the urge to snap a selfie. Hope it was worth it!

Attendees are not allowed to bring selfie sticks into any Disney theme parks due to safety concerns, but one patron at Disney’s California Adventure park in Anaheim, California apparently didn’t care for that rule. The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m.—fittingly, right around Magic Hour.

Here’s what Disney said about the ban last summer:

We strive to provide a great experience for the entire family, and unfortunately selfie-sticks have become a growing safety concern for both our guests and cast.

As the ride was in motion, a passenger apparently took out a selfie stick because LOOK I’M ON A RIDE. As soon as park officials spotted the danger, California Screamin’ was immediately shut down. Worse, all passengers were forced to evacuate and walk the rest of the way.

Boy, I can only imagine how that selfie-taking rider must have felt; what a walk of shame that must have been. And it’s not like the person can say they didn’t know because there are signs throughout the theme park that say selfie sticks are expressly forbidden.

Luckily, nobody was hurt, and after the ride was cycled through a few times without any passengers, it was reopened later that day. And that, my friends, is a reminder why you shouldn’t bring selfie sticks onto rollercoasters.
