Edge of Tomorrow, a sleeper hit from 2014 that gave Tom Cruise a unique time-traveling ability, is reportedly getting the sequel it deserves. According to Deadline, writers have been picked to pen the sequel. There’s no word on whether the original cast will return. Considering how perfect Cruise and Emily Blunt were in the film, it just wouldn’t be the same without them.
Directed by Doug Liman, Edge of Tomorrow found Cruise in a time loop that would send him back to the day preceding a crucial landing operation against an alien invasion. While the film didn’t gross an inordinate amount at the worldwide box office, it was generally liked by critics and featured a badass performance from Blunt, who proved to be a formidable action hero.
Cruise is currently wrapped up in The Mummy reboot and another Mission: Impossible movie, so there’s no telling when Edge of Tomorrow 2 will happen. The first film didn’t exactly leave room for a sequel, which means the writers will have to come up with something truly creative without it feeling forced.
