Former Major League Baseball pitcher Roy Halladay died when a plane he was piloting crashed into the Gulf of Mexico.

The local sheriff has confirmed that Halladay was killed in the crash, according to several reports. He was 40 years old.

According to Noah Pransky, the plane was registered in Halladay’s name on Monday.

Halladay spent 14 seasons in the big leagues with the Toronto Blue Jays and Philadelphia Phillies. He was an 8-time All-Star and won two Cy Young Awards. He pitched the 20th perfect game in MLB history during the 2010 season. Later that year he also threw a no-hitter in the playoffs against the Cincinnati Reds.

Halladay had recently posted several photos of his Icon a5 to social media, and appeared to be an avid pilot.

I’m really not big on posting pic’s of my stuff and I’ll never be on Cribs… but this A5 is so outrageous I’d feel guilty not sharing pics! pic.twitter.com/UUmZMfgsff

Halladay also recently wrote about flying the A5 “low over the water,” and compared it to flying a fighter jet.

I keep telling my dad flying the Icon A5 low over the water is like flying a fighter jet! His response….. I am flying a fighter jet!! pic.twitter.com/30eVjz9eS6
