It features one of the market’s most boring designs, worse water resistance than the wicked witch, and a shockingly high price. (Man, I miss the Nexus 6P.) Yet, the Google Pixel still manages to be one of this year’s best devices. Are you really surprised? Well, yeah, I am.
Following Google’s Pixel event, many people were left feeling confused and underwhelmed. The Nexus line was dead, replaced by something more expensive and infinitely less geeky. But the Pixel is shaping up to be Google’s smartest bet in years.
The thing about the Pixel is that it grows on you. It’s so bland that you end up kind of liking it; the boringness just kind of fades away. The lack of wireless charging? Who cares?
The shortcomings you thought would hold the Pixel back end of being a lot less significant than you first thought. Then, it wins you over with its silky smooth operation, excellent battery life, and amazing camera. Seriously, the Pixel’s camera is outstanding, made even better by unlimited original quality photos to Google Photos.

The jury is still out on Google Assistant. Yes, Google’s AI is pretty stinking smart. But it still needs a lot of work before it takes over the world. Even then, how often do you bark orders at your phone? Once a day? Once a week? Probably less than that.
There are a lot of really good smartphones on the market right now, and the Google Pixel is right up there in the mix. Despite its high price, the pros outweigh the cons, and one month after launch, the Pixel is only getting better.
Put it this way: You won’t regret buying Google’s first smartphone. Now, the question becomes, which size are you going to get?
