Hennessey Venom GT Spyder is the fastest convertible in the world – hits 265.6mph, top down

The Hennessey Venom GT Spyder is now officially the fastest convertible on planet Earth. Top Gear recently broke the story, noting that the Venom GT took the title from the previous champion, the Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse, which achieved a stop speed of 254mph.

The banana-yellow Hennessey Venom GT Spyder was let loose on a runway out in California owned by the U.S. Navy, where it had 2.9 miles to spin its tires as quickly as possible. And it turns out that was enough space for it to unleash the beast inside.

“I’ve wanted to test the top speed of our Venom GT Spyder even since our coupe ran 270.4mph on the Space Shuttle landing runway at NASA’s Kennedy Space Centre in 2014,” John Hennessey told Top Gear. “This was a great way to validate the technical excellence of our car which includes high-speed stability with an open roof.”

In celebration, Hennessey will sell three special Venom GT Spyder models, each with a hefty $1.3 million price tag, TopGear said.
