Hulu already offers a huge range of TV shows and movies to watch on-demand. Now the online streaming service is apparently eyeing live TV for its next big expansion with help from Hulu co-owners Disney and Fox.
The Wall Street Journal reports that Hulu’s live TV service will launch in early 2017. The service could cost about $40 per month, according to one anonymous executive insider. Beyond live television, Hulu’s new service will also offer cloud-based DVR and on-demand viewing for older episodes.
Disney and Fox are both set to offer their TV channels through the upcoming service. That would deliver content from ABC, ESPN, the Disney Channel, Fox News, FX and Fox’s national and regional channels around the country. Hulu may also offer a few other popular channels, but it’s expected to offer a pretty skinny bundle at launch.
One big question is whether NBC will be included in the service. NBCUniversal owns a major stake in Hulu, but agreed to be a silent partner after it was acquired by Comcast. WSJ notes that NBC hasn’t agreed to show its networks on the new service, at least not for now.
